First off, we'd like to thank very important people who helped us to become what and who we are. Big ups to SAPC! The South Auckland Poets Collective, especially our mentors who we will forever be grateful for: Dietrich Soakai, Marina Alefosio and Olive Asi. Of course, we couldn't forget about Mr Issac Thomas, the man who chose to be involved in the Spoken Word Poetry course. Also Action Education for working with SAPC to provide the Spoken Word Poetry course for high school students, which was how we got into Spoken Word. Also to Niu Navigation, because without them, we'd have no place to perform.
Speaking of Niu Navigation, very recently on 11/12/13, A.S.O had its first public performance at the December S.U.P Night, which stands for Stand Up Poetry. We had the amazing opportunity to witness amazing poets from James Cook High's C.V.T, Wax Poetic Revival, SAPC members and a range of other fantastic poets that we got to watch. We were able to perform our pieces and were able to get amazing feedback from such awesome poets. Watch this space, because I have a good feeling of what's coming next! Also, we were lucky enough to be given a free copy of an amazing poet's first book "Afakasi Speaks" by Grace Taylor and we also got a $5.00 off discount from an international poet, Omar Musa, on his book "Parang".
Also, the very next day, was A.S.O's first official show, in front of Year 7 and 8 girls from some of the members' former school. We had an awesome time performing in front of these girls and hope that our poems and words inspired them to aspire before they expire. One girl said "It was very organised and out-spoken, I liked they poems they performed. And I was very interested in what they were saying."
Keep watching this space for more information, because so far our futures bright!
