"The thing is, no one wants to hear some kid speak. But
through Spoken Word, they can’t help but to listen" ~ Dietrich Soakai
Spoken Word is more than just some speech or just a rap, Spoken Word is a way of life.
Putting yourself on stage to just let all your emotions pour right out of you and into the hearts
of those who wishes to listen to you.
Letting yourself become vulnerable yet so incredibly strong, its just an awesome experience.
To be onstage in front of a crowd of people, just telling your story and actually having people listen and understand you, its an incredible feeling, there's no other way to describe it.
I have been told that there are only two things that people need to be able to write or perform a Spoken Word piece and those are: a) Their voice and b) Their story.
And I'm positive that everyone in the world has at least one of those qualifications.
This website is made to spread the word about our relatively small and recent poets collective.
A.S.O Collective. Adolescents Speaking Out.
The word "aso" also means "day" in the Samoan language.
Because with every new day, there are new opportunities, new challenges and new friends
to make. Thus meaning, new stories to tell, new ways of presenting.
We are now living in a new day and age, in which children, teenagers, adolescents need to
be heard.
We need to be able to speak in this new times foreign from the kind of
life that our parents and past ancestors were living in and raised us in.
Through Spoken Word, through A.S.O, we will speak out.
